Vegetables that grow quickly
Everything cannot of course be sown at the last minute. You cannot "cheat" with plants that take a long time to develop, such as artichokes and chili, but in most cases it is not a problem to start cultivation late. There are many things that grow quickly. Lettuce, which requires a little spring cold to grow, can easily be pre-grown in a cool place indoors or in a shady corner of the garden before being planted in the bed or plant box.
Proper last-minute plants include summer carrots, beets, and cabbage varieties like Pak Choi - they grow from seed to mature plants in about eight weeks. Even faster are chard/swiss chard and spring onions, and if you're in a real hurry, arugula is a good alternative - this peppery leafy green vegetable provides a record-fast harvest.
Even in the middle of summer, you can actually sow a lot, for example radishes, peas, dill, turnips, kohlrabi, and Asian leafy greens.,And if it's early fall, it's still not too late to sow! Then spinach, arugula, Pak Choi, pea shoots, chard, and radishes thrive in the beds. When it gets a little cooler in the fall, there is also a new chance to sow the lettuce varieties that like slightly cooler temperatures. Parsley, coriander, sugar snap peas, and various types of cabbage can also be sown at this time.
Flowers that grow fast
Even among the flowers, there are varieties that grow quickly. Among them, nasturtiums are among those that are the most busy, and today they come in many colors, such as yellow, red, orange, pink, and apricot. Nasturtiums are not only beautiful, they can also be eaten – including the leaves. They work well in salads or pesto, for example. Nasturtiums originate from Central and South America, and there are over 90 varieties.
The most common are probably different types of the orange-red nasturtium, also known as Indian cress, which was brought to Europe by Portuguese sailors in the 16th century. They bloom beautifully until the frost arrives. Marigolds are another flower that you can sow late. They also come in many colors, as well as in single and double varieties. In addition to being very easy to grow, marigolds are an important food source for insects.
By growing marigolds, you attract predatory insects that can help you keep aphids and other pests in check. It is a good idea to plant marigolds preventively in the garden, under roses or fruit trees where pests can quickly become a problem.
Sunflowers, poppies, zinnias, borage, and cosmos are other flowers that grow quickly and add beautiful colors to the flower bed. See all our flower seeds
